Time to Embrace Your Fabulosity

#Know-Yourself Time to Embrace Your Fabulosity!đŸ€© Okay, the holidays are over, the bills are coming due, and the thought of wearing a swimsuit in a few short months is terrifying. No worries. Why? Because we are fabulous! For us it’s ‘New Year – New Outlook.’ Life Advice Which brings us to our new approach and new direction of setting and achieving goals! With these “5 Minutes of Focused Fabulosity” (outlined below) we can identify our next steps towards achieving and implementing our goals. All journeys begin at the beginning though, so we’re starting with one of the most essential skills you can learn
Today’s Tip Chunk it out: Break it into digestible bits. We all learned this strategy in kindergarten. Need to pronounce a long word? No problem. For example, AMAZING becomes A – MA – ZING. Easy!  The same can be done for our goals. This is how we unravel big goals and challenges and begin acting on them. That’s where the desire to make the change comes in. This is especially true if what you want to do is hard, because you will need to be motivated. If you’re unwilling to make even small changes, maybe you should ask yourself if you really want to achieve that goal. Maybe not. Because if it’s important enough, you will find a way! Now the action begins. Find a quiet place. Take a deep breath. For the next 5 minutes (or more if you like) work through the following steps: 5 Minutes of Focused Fabulosity: Today’s Action 1.Think about yourself and your life. 2. Write down everything you love about yourself and your life. 3. Don’t cheat yourself. Be honest, and admit to yourself everything that makes you uniquely fabulous. 4. Write down what you want to accomplish, and where you’d like to be in 10, 20, 30 years. 5. Sort your goals into categories, clumping items that are related. 6. Identify 1-3 broad, overarching, or long-term goals (the others will end up being action items). 7. Decide how important each is, then pick the one that means the most, the one that – if accomplished – will bring you genuine joy and satisfaction when you successfully accomplish it. 8. Congratulate yourself for achieving step one on your new life journey! Here’s how my example worked out
I’ve always wanted to be an author. While I’ve technically achieved that (with my first book, It’s Okay Not To Be Fabulous Every Day), my real, overarching, long term goal is to become a ‘successful’ author which, to me, means earning a living doing my craft. So, how shall I achieve that? By writing more books. After making my list, and sorting my goals, I had a clear take away: My long-term goal is to publish 5 books in 5 years. So, my goal for 2024 is to publish one book and write another. This goal is not only chunked out, it also adheres to a strategy mentioned in the Happy New Year issue – it’s S.M.A.R.T.: Specific (2 books), Measurable (I have a publishing to-do list and timeline with milestones), Achievable (I’m already writing one), Relevant (author-related), and Time-bound (one year). Taking the first step lays the foundation for success! Major life changes don’t happen all at once, they’re incremental. Making tiny changes in daily behaviors will inevitably create new and better habits. Understanding what you truly want to achieve and how you’re going to achieve it enables you take the first steps towards finding your path and making the changes you desire become real changes in your life. We start with a tiny habit and work up from there. More on that in the next issue! 🎉Congratulations on taking your first steps!🎉 Sign Up to my Newsletter to get advice like this directly in your inbox every other week.

Handling Adversity with Fabulosity

#Know-Yourself Handling Adversity with Fabulosity If you could use some positive energy or added inner-calm, here are a few quick and easy strategies to help you cope:  1. Practice positive self-talk. If you feel overwhelmed, remind yourself: “I can handle this.”  If you’ve made a mistake, remind yourself: “Everyone messes up. I can fix it.”   If it can’t be fixed, ask yourself: “Does it really matter?” Probably not.  If you feel like you’re failing, remind yourself: “I have value. I am worthwhile. I am loved.”  Upbeat Mantras Speaking these or other upbeat mantras to yourself out loud can change your thinking and reduce your stress. https://www.verywellmind.com/mantras-mental-health-benefits-7112640 2. Eat calming foods. Research has shown that:  A bowl of oatmeal or a piece of whole wheat toast helps your brain make more serotonin, which can improve your mood.  Nuts, like almonds, cashews, peanuts, walnuts, and seeds, like pumpkin, sesame, and sunflower can lower your risk of depression by 23%.  Avocados reduced anxiety in women.  Eating more fruits and vegetables is linked to lower rates of depression.  Dark chocolate lowers the risk of depressive symptoms.  More suggestions at: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/mood-food https://greatist.com/eat/foods-that-make-you-happy 3. Remember the basics: Slow down, breathe, calm your body and mind. A brief moment to center your Self can help you navigate the craziness and maintain your sanity.  Drink plenty of water, especially if you’re eating more and drinking alcohol. Staying hydrated improves both energy levels and brain function.   Sleep. Skimping on our rest usually means we end up cranky, listless, stressed, and sick.  Take a walk, rake some leaves, go to the gym, or do jumping jacks in your living room. It doesn’t matter. Just get your body moving. Physical activity improves mental and physical health.  Don’t spend more than you can afford. The holidays are not about commercial goods, so don’t get caught up in a spending frenzy that may create stress or hardship in the coming year.  More suggestions at: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-big-reframe/202212/how-handle-holiday-stress https://www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org/hometown-health/speaking-of-health/six-tips-for-staying-happy-and-healthy-during-the-holiday-season https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/7-health-benefits-of-water 4. New Year – New Goals

New Year – New Goals A New Year means a fresh start: a chance to look inward and evaluate who you are and who you want to be, and to thoughtfully consider your dreams and plans for the coming year. #FindYourFocus Set Your New Goals   There is endless advice about setting and achieving goals (such as my handy How to Maximize Your Potential PDF 😉). The truth is that the only advice that will ‘work’ is advice tailored to YOU and your situation. That’s why in my book and in my newsletters, I stress how vital it is to look inside, to know yourself, and to genuinely embrace your fabulosity in all its aspects. As with so much in life, it’s up to us to embrace a ‘New Year, New Me’ outlook because, in the end, we are the only ones who get to control our behavior. So, think about your goals and what will make you happy, and remember that ‘no thanks’ is a perfectly valid response to unwanted pressures. Having said all of this, I am at heart an optimist. I think 2024 is going to be a GREAT year, and I’m excited for it.  What I Do… In my years as an environmental professional, motivational coach, and now as an author writing my second book, I have found three strategies to be universally helpful and actionable. Set the Right Objectives: there’s a difference between goals, aspirations, dreams, and multistep tasks (which can feel like a goal was achieved when you cross off that last item on the checklist). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4N1q4RNi9I Establish S.M.A.R.T. Goals: this planning method helps you clearly define what you’re after and how to get it, so you are able to make real plans while keeping the full scope of your life goals in mind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elJcG83m-qg Develop Good Habits: no one is perfect, so doing your best to engage in daily practices that benefit you is crucial to establishing a foundation on which to build. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSZyzhi8C9o Going in to the New Year, many of us will resolve to change our lives or ourselves in some way. According to Forbes, the most common resolutions are: Improved fitness (48%) Improved finances (38%) Improved mental health (36%) Lose weight (34%) Improved diet (32%) Finances aside, it’s clear what we want most is improved physical and mental health. To help get you started, here are a few simple, easy-to-follow strategies you can use all year round for any gathering from a colleague’s going away party to that backyard barbeque. Tips and tricks to avoid eating, drinking, and stressing too much: Balance your meals – get the protein, veg, and carbs you need. Use a small plate – research has shown this reduces over-eating. Take small servings – this allows you to try several dishes. Eat more slowly – this allows your brain to recognize when your stomach is full. Don’t linger at the drinks and food tables – this helps avoid mindless grazing. Laugh – it releases endorphins. Take a walk – this helps you digest, clear your mind, and stimulates your mood. Don’t be too hard on yourself – life is a magical journey to enjoy!

Major News Outlets USA TODAY’s “Humankind” Section The New York Times’ “This Week in Good News” Today’s “Good News” Good News Outlets Keep in mind while you scroll…. I recognize the reality is that many of us are glued to online news. So, if you find yourself doom-scrolling on your phone or computer, remember three vital points: Social media is NOT A NEWS OULET. Even if you use social media platforms to find reliable news sources, don’t mistake all online content for real reporting. Most social sites aim to inflame as much as inform. Don’t start or end your day with the news. Beginning and winding down your day should be times for you to connect with your purpose, your loved ones, your inner self. Ingesting news at these times can influence our moods, affect our sleep, and can cause negative physical reactions. Aim for ‘Quality over Quantity.’ There is no need to exhaust yourself with rehashing the details over and over in search of a smidge more information. It is enough to pick one or two reliable primary news sources and venture out from there only when needed.
